Smut sells.
Michael Rourke learned this the hard way.
Struggling to make ends meet as a mystery writer, he sold his soul - and his pride - as he pedaled sex and lust writing under the pen name Christoph Strong.
No one knew he was the one behind the steamy stories on the bestsellers lists. And he planned to keep it that way.
Until he met her.
Monica Singer, an infamous blogger, is keen to discover the truth of his secret identity.
During a chance meeting at a book convention, Michael and Monica form an instant connection. And soon, an innocent online friendship becomes something so much more.
But as Michael starts to let his guard down, he doesn’t realize that the person he's learning to trust may be hiding secrets of her own.
Secrets that could ultimately destroy everything.
“No one was going to find out who
I really was. My reputation depended on
it. And there were only two people on
Earth that knew my real name: Michael Rourke, and that was me and my
agent. My plan was to keep it that way—keep
my twitchy erotica hand a dirty little secret.
I’d insisted that Christoph Strong was going to be a one-hit-wonder, and
that any name I’d made for myself through that genre would die once sales did.”
All Michael Rourke ever wanted to do was write
mysteries. Unfortunately, mysteries don’t
pay the bills…but apparently sex does.
I know that really makes him sound like a hooker of sorts…um,
no. Sweet, nerdy, reclusive Michael is
definitely not selling himself for sex…but he has absolutely sold his
soul. Sex sells, and Michael, I mean
Christoph has quite a talent for panty dropping, heart stopping, and straight
up smeeping with his erotic tales of Armond and Jasmine. Problem is, no one knows he’s one and the
same person…and he likes it that way.
That is until someone leaks his picture while on his way to
an author’s convention, causing him to become the most wanted man in
Houston. Too bad he has to contend with
Betty Black, his literary nemesis…until he arrives, and she doesn’t—but her
blogging best friend, Monica does.
“I’d need to forget my name for a
weekend and try to focus on the man they all wanted me to be—when in truth, I
couldn’t have been further from their perception of who I was…”
***
“I could do this. It had been a while since I’d written a
thriller, but I still had the fundamentals locked in my head. In order to keep the reader intrigued, I had
to have a compelling reason to keep them guessing. And if I was going to be the mystery in this
real-life scenario, Christoph Strong needed a story. And I was going to be the one to write it.”
But playing a part in novel is very different than real life
and unfortunately when deceptions are involved with the heart, things get
incredibly messy. Monica has learned
this the hard way—never did she anticipate actually developing feelings for
Christoph, nor did she ever think she’d find out his real name…or that what she
feels for him, he just might feel too.
“I’m an author, Monica. But for some reason you make me feel like I’ve
never written a word in my life.
Everything that pops into my head either doesn’t make sense or isn’t
good enough to describe this—us—whatever is going on here…I’ve been thinking
about what I’d say to you all day when I saw you here tonight. And then you were late and I ordered another
shot. So unfortunately my mind isn’t as
clear as I’d like it to be right now.
But after being sober all day and failing to come up with anything
remotely appropriate, the best line I could come up with was this…”
You’ll have to read the book to find out what he says!
*Deep inhale* Do you smell that? *Exhale* That is the smell
of originality! I FREAKING LOVED EVERY
SINGLE PAGE OF THIS BOOK!! I highlighted
so many places, it’s amazing I could even choose to use in this review. I can’t say enough about how refreshing it is
to read a piece of fiction that is all at once funny, erotic, original, and has
a truth behind it. I am now probably one
of Amalie’s biggest fans, and I will be reading every book she’s ever written
or ever write. It’s amazing how just
words on a page, some complete with definitions can just grab ahold of your
mind, your heart, everything and not let go.
I wanted to keep reading even after it ended…I almost flipped to the
beginning and started the book all over again!
That is how much I truly enjoyed this.
It will have you laughing, swooning—oh, I’m sorry, SMEEPING, and
everything in between. I couldn’t have
asked for a better way to spend my day and I cannot wait to share Word Play with all of my friends! Are you sure 5 stars is the max I can give?
