Firstly thank you for taking the time to do this interview with me for Whirlwindbooks, I thought I would jump right in and ask what first inspired you to write?
You’re so welcome, Fern! I’m thrilled that you've featured me on your blog.
I’m not sure what first inspired me. I've always had a crazy imagination, ever since I was little. I think when I was old enough to put those wacky ideas on paper, I knew it was my calling to do that for a living some day.
I am a HUGE fan of all of your books and I was wondering where you get your inspirations for the amazing story lines you create?
A lot of my ideas come from characters. I get the idea for a cool character, sometimes based on people I meet in real life, and I build a world around them. How the characters became what they are, what makes them change who they are, etc. I’m fascinated by human nature, especially by how flawed we are and yet how strong we can be. Life is about overcoming internal and external obstacles, and I love putting interesting characters in to a world that challenges them.
Are there going to be any new Series released this year?
On the paranormal romance side: I’m working on the first novel in a spin off series from the War of Gods series and the second book in the Rhyn Eternal series. I have a Buffy-style series I’ll launch probably before summer, too.
On the young adult side: I really want to launch a new young adult series this year, too. I've got one idea my manager gave me that I've started on, and I’m hoping to co-author the first book in a new series with Julia Crane this year.
How did you find the support from other Authors? I have always been curious if it is a welcoming world or if you have to gain respect to be considered a part of it.
It really ranges. There’s a lot of competition within the writing community, and I tend to focus more on writing and readers. I do have an awesome marketing partner (Julia Crane) who writes young adult paranormal, and I’m a member of a couple of great groups of writers who try to help cross-promote each other.
Are there any authors you’d consider your mentor thru this process?
It took about two years for me to find my first real mentor on the writing side – my manager, Margery. She’s got an eye for how to make my books stronger. She edited “Dark Summer” and “Autumn Storm” for me. I’ve revised them, and the amount of depth her ideas created made the stories so much stronger. The revised versions are being held back, though, until probably March. We’re going to re-release the first two Witchling books once we have new covers.
How much of the book came from your imagination and how much came from real people and experiences?
The characters normally have some semblance to someone I’ve met or some emotional flaw I want to explore. The settings often come from places I’ve visited or lived. Otherwise, their mostly from my imagination or my dreams! I’m a huge dreamer, and I come up with some cool story lines from my dreams!
If you were to cast a movie for one of your books, who would you pick to play who?
“Katie’s Hellion” (#1, Rhyn Trilogy)
Rhyn – Jason Momoa
Katie – Emma Stone
Kris – Chris Hemsworth
Gabriel – Jai Courtney
